Admins: COUNTER Reports are Release 4

COUNTER Reports are Release 4 compliant for data collected since April 2013. Usage data collected prior to April 2013 was in some cases not collected with Release 4 resolution/granularity.

ebrary offers the following Release 4 COUNTER reports:

  • Book Report 2:  Number of “Successful Section Requests“; by Month and Title
    • Successful Section Requests” = the SUM of the number of:
      • Pages viewed (note Counter 2 reports tally a page view only once 10 seconds have elapsed between page turns)
      • Copies made
      • Pages printed
      • Instances of PDF downloads
      • Instances of full-document downloads
    • If a title was opened, it shows up on Book Report 2.  However, it only tallies up the counts above.
      • So if the title was opened, and then closed without any views, copies, prints, etc., then the title will show up on the report, but there will not be a tally count.
    • Book Report 2 and ebrary’s Title Report handle “no usage” slightly differently:
      • Titles will not show up on ebrary’s Title Report unless they had a view, copy, print, or download (that is, titles that were opened and then closed without doing anything do not show up on ebrary’s Title Report)
  • Book Report 3:  Turnaways; by Month and Title
    • Applies only to titles that are single-user (including multiple single-user-only copies of the same title, including 3USER licenses).
    • When user whose access would exceed the limit set in the license, that user is “turned away”, or denied immediate access to the title.
    • Note, we only count one turnaway per book, per user session
      • This is to avoid counting an impatient user’s multi-clicks.
  • Book Report 5:  Total Searches WITHIN a title; by Title
    • The number of times a search for text WITHIN an ebrary book was performed.
    • That is, the number of times the magnifying glass icon or the “Search Document” button was used for searching WITHIN the document.
    • Note, the old and new counter 5 reports are completely different – they count completely different things:
      • OLD Counter 5 tallies number of times the book was OPENED.
      • NEW Counter 5 tallies number of SEARCHES for text strings WITHIN the book once it was open.
  • Platform Report 1:  Total Searches (for books on the ebrary platform) and Result Clicks; by Month and Platform  (This report would also include Record Views, but these are not applicable to ebrary)
    • Regular Searches” = the number of times a search for books was done on the ebrary platform
      • Note, this replaces the old Counter Report 6 ‘number of searches’
    • Result click” = the number of books that were opened from a search on the ebrary platform.
      • Important!  Result clicks are not being counted in the new reader.
      • A book is counted as being opened only when the old QuickView reader is used AND only if at least one page is turned.
      • These numbers will be very different from other reports’ “user sessions” for a book because this report only counts:
        • The opening of the book when it was the result of a search on the ebrary platform
        • And only if it was opened by clicking on its title or cover on a site does not have the new reader – not if it was opened in the old “Java-based Reader” or the new reader
        • Only if at least one page was turned or it was used in some other way
      • “Result Click” data is only available for Feb 2013 and onward.

Regarding our Old Counter reports:

  • Old COUNTER reports did NOT count downloads (either page-range downloads or full-document downloads), but the new COUNTER reports do.
  • Book Report 2Old vs New reports
    • New COUNTER Book Report 2 tallies a page view only once a page has been viewed for more than 10 seconds, the old BR2 tallied every page turn
    • Therefore, the new BR2 will typically show lower “Successful Section Requests” than the old BR2
    • However, this can sometimes be offset by the fact that the new COUNTER reports include download data, but the old reports don’t
